The Curren Memorial is one of the High lights of the Victorian Compact Speedcar calendar it signals not only the start of a new year and the beginning of the much anticipated blue ribbon events but also honours the legacey left behind by the Curren Brothers.
The 2010 Curren Memorial was another great installment of the history of this race as 18 cars lined the pits to try and capture the 2010 Curren Memorial, with 7 of the top 10 finishers in the 2009 Australian Championship ready to go!
The Curren memorial also saw the the return of Cam Tournier and Ian Hutchinson. Both drivers have had a lengthy layoff from the Compacts but were very much looking forward to competing again.
Each driver faced off in 3 heats with clean sweeps being done by the Aussie champ Stainer and Australia 2 of Peter Robotham.
Racing was fast and furious as the Compacts showed very good form with the heats going caution free with some close wheel to wheel action.
The Astrella family had a double whammie with both cars out for the night after the first round of heats with different mechanical issues.
Neil Pevitt also was having problems in the Vic 3 machine which would plague his night which would eventually see him parked on the trailer after heat 2.
Troy Wolley was ready to take it up to Stainer, Robotham and co. The driver of the Car City, Remco Solutions, Swift Chassis Vic 9 has showed terrific form in the Vic 9 machine only for engine dramas to plague the Suzuki powerplant during heat race action which would eventually cause Wolley to hit the wall and damage the front end leaving him out for the night.
As the field lined up for the feature it was Stainer and Robotham that would lead the pack to the greens.
As the greens dropped the tussle to the first corner saw the green machine snatch the lead from the hard charging Robotham with Day slotting into 3rd.
The crowd watched as the Compacts ran side by side wheel to wheel in a great display of racing.
Stainer and Robotham checked out as a battle royale between Day, Crawford and Hutchinson intensified. Back in the pack Griffiths starting rear of field in the Bob English Rotary was on a charge as he drove up onto the back of Jones, Crawford and Tournier.
Hutchinson was on a charge as he slotted his way into third as Day and Crawford raced wheel to wheel with the crowd holding there breath.
Griffiths slowed momentarily after mistaking brake lights from the spectators area as a red light stoppage dropping a number of positions.
With only a handful of laps to go Griffiths had a major scare as he entered Turns 3 the red Vic 71 drove hard into 3 under the Vic 72 of Steven English only for the steering box to brake snapping the Vic 71 hard right and heading to the wall!
With lots of luck Griffiths was able to steer the car using the brake and throttle to the infield as Caution was out again due to Edwards Jnr also spinning due to steering failure.
With the field bunched up once again it was a green flag drag race to the finish with Stainer storming to the win with Robotham second Hutchinson 3rd.
A fantastic nights racing on a tuff track that was suffering from the heat of the day.
Dont miss any of the action as the Compacts move into there blue ribbon events for 2010.
